Pres. Aquino reiterates need to remove Corona

President Benigno Aquino III said on Thursday that evidence presented so far in the impeachment court shows how unfit Chief Justice Renato Corona is to remain the leader of the judiciary.

In a speech commemorating the 26th anniversary of the Edsa People Power Revolution at La Consolacion College in Manila, Pres. Aquino listed some of the reasons why Corona should be convicted by the impeachment court.

He asserted that the Chief Justice clearly violated the law when he failed to disclose to the public his Statement of Assets, Liabilites, and Net Worth. He also pointed out discrepancies in Corona’s SALN.

"Maliwanag pa po sa sikat ng araw: Ginoong Corona, ang sinumpaan mong salaysay ay hindi tugma sa natuklas na pag-aari mo. Maski saang paaralan po, hindi lang sa Pilipinas kundi sa buong mundo (It's clearer than the light of day, Mr. Corona, your sworn statement does not tally with your assets that have been discovered. Whether in this school or anywhere in the world), 3.5 million pesos does not equal 31.5 million, " Aquino said.

The President said he believes it should not be difficult for Corona to disclose his accounts if he is not hiding anything.

Aquino also pointed out the Supreme Court’s issuance of a Temporary Restraining Order on the travel watchlist against former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last year that was meant to prevent possible flight from a prospective case of fraud committed during the 2007 election.

He said the reason behind Corona’s appointment as Chief Justice was obvious: That Corona is there to help Arroyo cover up her misdeeds when she was president.

Arroyo appointed Corona as Chief Justice a week after the 2010 elections, which President Aquino maintains was a "midnight appointment" and, therefore, illegal.

The president clarified that his stand on the impeachment case against Corona is nothing personal, that he is only implementing needed reforms in light with his administration’s good governance agenda.
