Senate CCTV footage shows no 'little lady'

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage released by the Senate security staff, a copy of which was obtained by Solar News, do not seem to support Representative Reynaldo Umali's claims that a "small lady" handed him documents containing details of alleged bank documents of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Senators sitting as judges in the impeachment court had earlier questioned the source of the alleged dollar account records in Philippine Savings Bank that the prosecution attached to the request for a subpoena.

The CCTV footage was taken on February 2.

Various sequences of the video clips showed Umali going straight to the prosecution room upon arriving in the Senate; granting interviews to members of the media outside the room; and doing a one-on-one interview with a female journalist, among others, but no such document or envelope were handed to him.

By around 3 o'clock in the afternoon, when Umali left the Senate, no such "small" lady could be seen at the time that Umali supposedly received the confidential bank records.

Umali, however, insisted on his story, adding that he has to see the CCTV footage first to refresh his memory.

On Tuesday, Senator Miriam Santiago scolded the prosecution for presenting documents and evidence based apparently on hearsay. Santiago lectured the prosecution after the Katipunan, Quezon City branch manager of PSBank testified that the bank records were fake.

Santiago said that, as a former trial court judge, she was insulted by this development.

For his part, Senator Vicente Sotto warned that Umali may be removed from the prosecution panel if a senator-judge moves for it on the impeachment floor. ACL / Reportage from Camille Elemia and Joyce Ilas
