Outspoken nun calls on Corona to open bank accounts
Date Posted: 20 February 2012 0 CommentsFebruary 20, 2012 - Mary John Mananzan, co-chairperson of the Association of Major Religious Superiors of the Philippines, on Monday called on Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona to allow the scrutiny of his dollar accounts for the sake of transparency and accountability.
AMRSP is an organization of 275 women religious congregations in the country.
Mananzan said she was disappointed with the decision of the impeachment court to obey the Supreme Court's temporary restraining order (TRO) on Corona's dollar accounts.
"Will the TRO serve to discover the truth or will it hinder it?" Mananzan asked as she continued to question the decision of both the TRO and the Senate impeachment court's actions. She quickly added that the answer is quite obvious.
Mananzan said Corona should practice 'delicadeza' and resign from his post.
She also called on the Senator-judges to remain firm in their duty to pursue the truth while maintaining their independence as an impeachment body.
She said that, like the public, she is already exasperated with the course of the impeachment trial. She described the developments in the impeachment hearings as "circuitous". The tribunal, she stressed, should get to the truth in the soonest possible way.
