Fresh from their championship celebration, the Alaska Aces groped for form against the Barako Bull Energy Boosters in the early goings of their Philippine Cup debut. But the Aces hunkered down to business and erased the lead in no time.
Because they are coming off a championship in the last conference, Alaska Coach Tim Cone said he expected his team to start off sluggishly. Nonetheless, the coach remained optimistic. “By and large, we played real good on both ends in the second half. The first half we played? I hope not to see that anymore in the season,” he said.
Joe Devance led the Aces in scoring, pouring in 24 points. He was followed by LA Tenorio who dropped 18 while Sonny Thoss and Cyrus Baguio scored 11 apiece. New-recruit Bonbon Custodio made a good account of himself as he contributed nine points, three rebounds, and two assists.
The Barako Bull Energy Boosters were led by Sunday Salvacion with 22, Mark Isip with 14, and rookie Hans Thiele with 12.

The much awaited debut of Nonoy Baclao, the first pick in this year’s draft, will have to wait another day as the former Ateneo Blue Eagle suffered a knee contusion that disabled him from playing for his team in their first game of the Philippine Cup.
Even if they were a man down, the Air21 Express put up a gallant stand against a powerhouse team in the San Miguel Beermen. But the depth of San Miguel’s bench was just too much for the young Express. The Beermen built and early lead and never gave it up. The Express tried their best to get close but all their runs were spoiled by counter runs from the seasoned Sam Miguel squad.
Rabeh Al-Hussaini, who was drafted behind Baclao, proved that he is good enough to hang with the big boys, dropping 16 points and garnering eight rebounds in his professional debut. Wesley Gonzales led the Express in scoring, exploding for 19 points. He was followed by Al-Hussaini, Wynne Arboleda who scored 13, and JR Quinahan who contributed 10.
Dondon Hontiveros led the attack of the Beermen with 24 points, followed by Arwind Santos with 19 and J Washington with 14.
Ginebra Kings rebound against Powerade Tigers

The Barangay Ginebra Kings were shocked by the Meralco Bolts in the opening of the Philippine Cup. They made sure that they were not going to start this season with two straight losses.
The Kings started on fire led by their energetic line-up of guards featuring Willie Miller who scored 15 points, which was incidentally the same number as their lead to end the first half.
The Powerade Tigers scratched and clawed their way back into the game as they erased the 15-point halftime lead and tied it all up at 75 with three minutes left in the game. But the Kings buckled down and employed a suffocating defense which did not allow the Tigers to score anymore.
After Miller, six other Kings scored at least 8 points. Gary David led the Tigers with a whopping 27 points and Mark Macapagal added 13. Sadly for the Tigers, they did not get much from everyone else with veterans Dennis Espino and Renren Ritualo not scoring in double digits.
The Powerade Tigers hope to bounce back from this defeat against the Barako Bull Energy Boosters while the Kings try to get a winning streak going against the San Miguel Beermen both on October 17 at the Araneta Coliseum.
