Prosecution sets sights on Article 3
Date Posted: 15 February 2012 0 CommentsMembers of the prosecution panel in the Corona impeachment trial said Wednesday that, barring any surprise development, it expects to end the presentation of witnesses for Article 2, for culpable violation of the Constitution for non-disclosure of the statement of assets, liabilities and net worth.
They said they are prepared to move on to Article 3, which tackles Chief Justice Renato Corona’s competence and integrity.
Prosecution spokesman Representative Erin Tañada said that, for Article 2, officials from the Bank of the Philippine Islands and Philippine Savings Bank will be testifying and presenting documents requested by the impeachment court.
BPI Ayala Branch Manager Leonora Dizon was asked by the impeachment court to present the monthly bank statements of Corona.
PSBank Katipunan Branch Manager Annabelle Tiongson was also asked to verify if the documents attached to the subpoena for Corona’s bank accounts are valid copies of the original document.
Representative Kaka Bag-ao, meanwhile, said that the prosecution will be ready to present Philippine Airlines Vice President Enrique Javier as their first witness for Article 3.
Article 3 alleges that Corona, as Chief Justice, betrayed his ethical principles by allegedly influencing the high court to reverse its own decision in a labor case filed by the Flight Attendants Association of the Philippines against Philippine Air Lines. The complaint asserted that a previous Supreme Court ruling adverse to PAL was recalled after, Estelito Mendoza, a lawyer for former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, wrote a letter asking to have it overturned.
