Prosecutors seek PSBank originals of CJ bank docs

Date Posted: 15 February 2012     0 Comments

The House prosecution panel on Tuesday asked the impeachment court to order Philippine Savings Bank to produce original copies of the bank documents of Chief Justice Renato Corona pertaining to peso and foreign currency deposits for "proper comparison and verification".

Earlier, on Monday, PSBank Katipunan Branch manager Annabelle Tiongson had claimed that the specimens of bank documents presented by the prosecution were fake.

In a supplemental request, the prosecutors indicated that they want to include the original copies of the customer identification and specimen signature cards.

"PSBank officers have a natural motive to deny the authenticity (of Annexes A to A-4) because they would want to avoid potential liability for the possible leakage of their bank records. There has to be an actual production of the original bank records of PSBank pertaining to all the peso and dollar accounts of respondent (with proof that the integrity of such records has been maintained), so that a proper comparison and verification can be made," the petition said.

The prosecution reiterated their belief that there are at least 10 such bank accounts after PSBank President Pascual Garcia confirmed the existence of Corona's alleged dollar deposits, and so the existence of the documents being sought were not at all baseless.

"As to the possibility of the violation of the confidentiality of bank deposits, the Honorable Impeachment Court has ruled that such confidentiality does not apply to the instant impeachment proceedings, and has granted the prosecution’s request for issuance of subpoenae," it added.
