Impeachment trial tackles important issues in Senate caucus
Date Posted: 20 February 2012 0 CommentsFebruary 20, 2012 - In Monday’s caucus, senator-judges expect to tackle a number of issues, including possible sanctions to be directed at the defense lawyers who earlier alleged that Malacañang officials were offering bribes to senators to influence the course of the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
The defense panel had announced the bribes allegedly being peddled by the Palace in return for the impeachment defying the temporary restraining order on the dollar accounts of Corona and, ultimately, moving for a conviction.
Also expected to be discussed is the Supreme Court’s decision rejecting a subpoena from the Impeachment Court on access to the records of certain cases deemed to have a bearing to the proceedings, including the high court's ruling on the Flight Attendants Association of the Philippines (FASAP) case, which is part of Article 3 of the impeachment complaint where prosecutors accuse Corona of playing a role in the flip-flopping on final rulings by the Supreme Court.
Relatedly, Quezon City Representative Jorge Banal is expected to appear Monday, to be questioned by the senator-judges on his involvement on the matter of securing copies of signature cards on alleged Corona deposits with the Philippine Savings Bank branch in Katipunan, Quezon City.
